New Radio Program Gives Veterans a Voice

There is a new radio program that gives a voice to the military community and concerned citizens to express their opinion on veteran affairs, economy and anything else veterans wish to talk about.  WSBR-740 AM Radio station in South Florida that reaches all the way down to Miami to Stuart and to Lake Okeechobee.  It’s called “Military Mail Call with Sarge” and the man behind the program is a Vietnam veteran named Tom Graver.  He covers the entire gamut of veteran issues, such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, the VA’s inability to help veterans quickly, to what is going on with current conflicts overseas such as IRAQ, and any and other issues affecting veterans.  So if you have a chance to listen, the veteran hour is every Thursday at 12 noon EST.  You can call the show and talk live at 888-721-0074.  His mission is to entertain, inform and to educate.

“So, join in and let's talk about it. Remember there are over 26,000,000 veterans.  We carry a "BIG STICK!"” (Tom Graver).  Remember the radio station is WSBR-740 AM and the show is on every Thursday at 12 Noon.

Thank You for Your Service to Your Country.

Progress Report on Marine that died on June 8th, 2013

To my fellow American Legion members, I just wanted to give you all an update on where we are with the burial of the Marine that died in June of this year.  Marine Sgt Clayton H. Reeves served honorably in the United States Marine Corps, from 1951 to 1956.  He earned the “National Defense Service Medal” and eventually retired to Ft Lauderdale where his daughter, her husband and his grandchildren live.  The circumstances surrounding his death are not typical.  It has taken some doing and patience with claiming his body and raising the money needed for getting him cremated, but he is finally cremated and awaiting burial at the South Florida National Cemetery in Lake Worth.  I am working with his daughter on getting him buried with the respect he has earned and deserves.  I will keep you posted.

I wish to thank all those individuals that contributed to this Marines cremation expenses; members from American Veterans for Equal Rights, Commander Larry Roberts from American Legion Post 220, members from American Legion 36, as well  and other posts that called to contribute.  It was nice to see that when needed, this Marine’s fellow Veterans came to his Aide and proved he was not alone.

Thank You for Your Service to Your Country.

Oct. 16, 1989 - The long-standing objective of the Legion to improve adjudication procedures for veterans claims is achieved when the U.S. Court of Veterans Appeals becomes operational. Most of the provisions contained in the law creating the court were originally included in the Veterans Reassurance Act, written by the Legion and introduced in Congress in 1988.

October 28, 1886 - The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on Bedloe's Island in New York Harbor. The statue was a gift from the people of France commemorating the French-American alliance during the American Revolutionary War. Designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, the entire structure stands 300 feet (92.9 meters) tall. The pedestal contains the words: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

August 7  - is Purple Heart Day

On August 21, 1959 - the modern United States receives its crowning star when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signs a proclamation admitting Hawaii into the Union as the 50th state. A TESTAMENT TO THE CARING AND SHARING OF POST 36

The following is a quote from an email received from the Schiro Family, in appreciation of the Memorial Day Brick Laying Ceremony:

And thank you so very much, for your kind email but also for providing these family members with a deeply
meaningful opportunity today. They shared with me all the details and it brought me such joy that it worked out this way, because since Joe died the kids and I, as well as his parents, have received so much support and attention. But those you met today were Joe’s biggest cheerleaders and loved him with all their hearts. It meant more than you know to have them be the ones receiving the thanks and honor due them in light of losing the apple of their eye. So again from the bottom of my heart I thank you. And extend my gratitude to all at the American Legion for very truly providing comfort and healing for us and so many. I do hope we can meet in person sometime. Deepest thanks, Diana Schiro.

A MESSAGE FROM THE COMMANDER

During the month of May, our country will celebrate two cherished patriotic observances.

On May 1, we celebrate Loyalty Day, which by definition, is, a day set aside for the reaffirmation of loyalty to the United States and for the recognition of the heritage of American freedom.

On May 27, we celebrate Memorial Day, which by definition is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

As we take time during this month to give thanks to all those who served, and continue to serve, in defending the American Way, I would like to extend a personal thanks.

To all members of the William C. Morris Post 36 American Legion, Legionaries, Sons of the American Legion, Women’s Auxiliary, and the American Freedom Riders, I thank each and every one of you for making it a pleasure and a privilege to serve as your Commander. Your continued support and friendship at and for the post has been heartwarming, and an honor to be a part.

For God and Country,
Larry Sapp, Commander
